Types of Smokers
How can I give quit smoking? Today this question is considered one of the eternal questions, as there is no universal method to help every smoker quit. U.S. psychologists believe that the key to getting rid of the habit could be found in the reasons to smoke. They divided smokers into seven types, with each of them being characterized by facing different difficulties when trying to quit.
1: Weight-concerned
Image: Such smoker is concerned about his weight and believes that cigarettes help in his struggle with excess weight. According to Reader’s Digest survey, 23% of men-smokers across Europe share that opinion and are scared to get rid of their habit. British scientists discovered that weight-concerned smoke even more in spring, before the beach season begins. Probably the dissatisfaction from the image in the mirror makes them want to light up. Motivation to quit: It is true that after quitting, the ex-smokers gain several pounds of weight. However, in several months, most of smokers get back to their normal weight.
2: Scrupulous
Image: Such smoker is willing to give, but can’t. And he is very scruple about this. So, he is smoking from time to time, keeping his habit in secret from his friends and relatives. And when asked if he is still puffing, he always says ‘No’. Motivation to quit: These smokers are used to saying that a single cigarette can’t be harmful. But doctors oppose this opinion, as the studies show that even 1-2 cigarettes a day can affect heart and vessels normal functioning form more than a week.
3: Rebel
Image: Such smoker keeps puffing namely because it harms health and he knows he is swimming against the stream and gets on the nerves of people around him. Tobacco companies still use this type of motivation to continue smoking in their advertising companies and marketed their products as “aimed for rebellious spirits” “confident guys” and etc. Motivation to quit: Another attractive attribute of freedom and independence is for example, the bike. It looks gorgeous and brutal and gives confidence. However, they are not used by all the people, because we know it is dangerous and can cause severe injuries. The same is true in case of smoking.
4: Sociable
Image: Such smoker light up only when in the same company with his friends who smoke. However, he is absolutely sure that he is not a smoker and believes he can quit whenever he wants to. Motivation to quit: Figures show that 20% of such smokers become regular smokers, and another 50% keep smoking with their friends during decades. So, don’t lie to yourself, because even if you smoke occasionally, you still harm your health.
5: Nervous
Image: Such smoker light up only when he needs to calm down his nerves. So, after the fight with his spouse or his boss he can smoke up to a pack at once and don’t notice that. Motivation to quit: Maybe after lighting up a cigarette or two you feel more relaxed; however, nicotine only worsens stress. According to a study performed by U.S. scientists, smoking increases physiological factors characteristic to stress. Yet, as it stimulates production of dopamine hormone in the brain, which makes us happy, we think that cigarettes indeed help reduce stress. Remember, that only you can overcome stress and depression, and cigarettes play the role of pain-killer, but not remedy.
6: Constant quitter
Image: Each time when he lights up, such smoker tells himself that this is his last cig. He made multiple attempts to give up, and agrees with famous Mark Twain saying that it is easy to quit smoking. I did that many times. Motivation to quit (finally): Never Give Up! Try all the methods to quit smoking – from nicotine patches to hypnosis, something will help you for sure.
7: Ideological
Image: 16% of smokers admit they never tried to quit smoking, and have no intention to do that. They don’t care about health complications and discomfort for people around them. They love smoking, how love eating or watching TV. Motivation to quit: Every cigarette smoked decreases your life-span by 11 minutes. So, you re a pack-a-week smoker, you cut your own life by 1 year. Not impressed? Gee, you can’t be cured then.
