Smoking Etiquette
Have you ever thought about smoking etiquette? If not than look through the following rules and try to observe them in order not to bother non-smokers.
According to the recent findings, about 23.5% of men and 18.1% of women are current smokers. Smokers often face insults and even hostility from non-smokers when they try to enjoy their favorite smokes. Those smokers who practice particular etiquette can avoid disturbing non-smokers around them and enjoy their smoking process in peace.
- Public Place
If you are in a public place where there are many people besides you, and you want to light up, ask them, “Do you mind I light up?” In case the place is too crowded than abstain from lighting up until you get to a less congested place. Even if those people who are around you do not mind if you smoke, you may disturb someone who is away but still forced to be close enough to be exposed to smoke. If you often smoke while walking, handle you r cigarettes with care in order not to burn anyone accidentally.
- Smoke Direction
Always look where you are blowing your smoke, and be aware of the wind direction if you are smoking outside. You probably do not want to unintentionally disturb people around you by exhaling smoke in their faces. If you see this happening, try to do anything to prevent it.
- Entrances
When you are in place where smoking is prohibited, step outside if you want to light up, do not stand close to entrance. If you stay near the door, you will expose everyone who passes. This can annoy some non-smokers. Make a few steps away from the entrance or if possible go round the corner.
- Release
Do not throw away your cigarette butts on the ground. Always release them properly in special ashtrays or garbage cans, as you can even be fined for littering. If you do not have any disposal place, hang the butt until you find it.
- Designated Smoking Areas
If it happens that being in a designated smoking area someone asks you to put your cigarette, politely answer that you are in a place where smoking is allowed. At present many beaches, shops and other establishments have designated areas for smokers. No matter what, you should always be polite to others. If someone tries to lecture you on hazards of smoking, firmly tell them, “I do not need any health information, I am not a child.”
